Cicero Art House: contemporary art exhibition in Mérida

Emerging gallery, first edition

December 3–6, 2026 · Casona Cicero, Mérida, Yucatán

Central area of Casona Cicero

For four days, Casona Cicero becomes a gallery. The rooms, corridors and gardens —in a house built around 1910 in Itzimná— host the work of five local artists: photography, painting, printmaking, portraiture and urban archaeology created in Yucatán by those who were born here or have made it their home.

Cicero Art House is contemporary art in Mérida meant to be walked through: an exhibition expanded room by room, accompanied by concerts, talks with the artists and activities for the whole family, in the heart of Yucatán’s year-end art season.

The house as gallery

Each room of the house will be taken over by an artist. The architecture is not the backdrop of the exhibition: it is part of it. Old walls, original floors, courtyards and corridors are in dialogue with the contemporary work — memory and present, tradition and experimentation, permanence and transformation.

Lizette Abraham

Performative photography

Lizette Abraham explores the transformation of the body and identity through matter: with her own body she stretches, folds and sets fabrics in motion, in a dialogue between photography, sculpture and staging. She studied in Mérida and is pursuing a PhD in Arts and Design at UNAM. She has twice won the Festival Internacional de la Imagen, held fellowships from FONCA and PECDA Yucatán, and has exhibited in Mexico, Bogotá, Spain, the United States, Berlin and Japan.

Javier Barrera

Contemporary painting

Javier Barrera Perera is a Yucatecan visual artist and academic. His practice evolved from photography and digital experimentation to painting, where he found his own language: oil and wax on wood. His figurative work explores memory, identity and permanence; the body, the landscape, the red circle and certain animal presences act as signs of an open, poetic narrative, between the real and the dreamlike.

Alfredo Romero

Urban archaeology

Originally from Spain, he dedicates his work to preserving the distinctive character of cities and communities in Mexico. He captures scenes locals walk past every day without noticing. His technique, strappo, preserves layers of advertisements, murals and urban art, revealing how they change over time.

His work centers on urban archaeology and social memory: he investigates how the passage of time, ephemeral architecture and advertising signs tell the hidden history of the streets we inhabit.

Rodolfo Baeza

Portraiture

Rodolfo Baeza was born in Mexico City in 1977, into a family from Mérida, and grew up in Mérida. He worked as a graphic designer, animator and photographer before turning to painting; his work explores the human condition, otherness and the deconstruction of identity through portraiture. He has had solo shows at the MACAY, at the Museo Civico Alessandro Garda in Italy and at the Museo de la Ciudad de Mérida, and is part of the Colección Milenio.
